VALKYRIE - ROTTERDAM (ZUID-HOLLAND) 1984 - 1986
BIOGRAPHY: The Dutch Manowar! At the end of ’84 Rob Weber (ex-FUTURE TENSE) and Ed Warbie (ex-everything) decided to start a new band. As they both were huge Manowar fans they wanted a band in the same style including all the fur and boots. Soon they find in singer Eric Smits and Remco Helbers additional members. In the rehearsal room they start to write songs which results in a demo called ‘Deeds of Prowess’. If you like Manowar’s ‘Into Glory Ride’, you will love this demo. It’s pure epic metal in the best way you can have. Songs like ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ and ‘Ancient Steel’ reminds you of the times when mankind was still walking around in fur clothes and were chasing mammoths! The band photo shows that was indeed the whole concept of the band. Eric Smits shows on the demo what a great singer he is, Rob Weber has his typical guitar riffing, Ed Warbie proofs why so many bands asked him to join their band and Remco Helbers shows some exceptional bass skills. A negative thing is the bad production. The band sends the demo around and collects some good reviews. But not much happens with the band. In the mid of ’86 the band splits up leaving behind a brilliant demo and not a single live gig. Ed Warby pops up in many bands (Elegy, Gorefest to name a few), Eric Smits joins several bands during the years (including the brilliant Tempter). Rob Weber leads an hedonistic life until he joins the reunion of Future Tense around 2000. Remco Helbers started to play the stick (a weird 8-snare instrument) and been around in a few bands too.
